5 Social Media Mistakes Every Miami Business Makes (and How to Fix Them Today)

By Franco Lopez · March 2026 · 6 min read

You are posting. You are showing up. Maybe you are even consistent. But the followers are not growing, the engagement is flat, and you are starting to wonder if social media even works for businesses.

It does. But these five mistakes are silently killing your reach. I see them in almost every Miami business I audit.

Mistake #1: Selling in Every Post

This is the most common one. Every post is "Buy this," "Book now," "Limited time offer," "DM to order."

Nobody follows a business to be sold to. They follow for value, entertainment, or inspiration. When every post is a pitch, people scroll right past — and the algorithm notices.

The fix: Follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should educate, entertain, or inspire. 20% can sell directly. The selling posts convert way better when they are surrounded by value.

Mistake #2: No Video

In 2026, if you are not using video, you are invisible. Every platform — Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, even LinkedIn — is prioritizing video content in their algorithms.

Static images get a fraction of the reach that even a basic video gets. And you do not need a production crew. A 30-second clip on your phone of you explaining what you do will outperform a polished graphic every time.

The fix: Post at least 2-3 short videos per week. Show your product in action, answer a common question, or give a quick tip. Authenticity beats production quality.

Mistake #3: Ignoring Your Bio

Your bio is not a place for motivational quotes or emojis. It is a conversion tool. When someone visits your profile, they decide in 3 seconds whether to follow or leave.

The fix: Your bio should answer three questions:

Example: "Custom websites for Miami businesses. Live in 24 hours. Book your free call below."

Mistake #4: Posting Without Hashtags or Location Tags

For a local business, hashtags and location tags are how new people find you. If you are a bakery in Coral Gables and you are not using #CoralGables #MiamiBakery #CoralGablesFood, you are missing free local discovery.

The fix: Use 5-10 targeted hashtags per post. Mix broad ones (#Miami) with specific ones (#CoralGablesBakery). Always tag your location. This puts you on the local Explore page.

Mistake #5: Not Engaging With Your Community

Social media is not a billboard. It is a conversation. If you only post and never comment, reply, or engage with other local businesses and customers, the algorithm buries you.

The fix: Spend 15 minutes a day engaging. Reply to every comment on your posts. Comment on posts from local businesses and potential customers. Answer DMs quickly. The algorithm rewards accounts that are actively social — not just broadcasting.

The businesses winning on social media in Miami are not the ones posting the most. They are the ones engaging the most.
